A Coruña DNA metabarcoding workshop

A Coruña DNA metabarcoding workshop

Welcome to the A Coruña DNA metabarcoding workshop

Organised by AllGenetics, the Universidade da Coruña (Evolutionary Biology Group and Centro de Investigacións Científicas Avanzadas), and the Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de A Coruña,  this workshop will take place June 27th - 28th 2018 in the city of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain.

DNA metabarcoding, along with other high-throughput-sequencing-based methods, has undergone significant development in recent years. Nowadays, its potential use in both basic research and industry is promising. However, some technical aspects, such as implementing third-generation sequencing platforms, obtaining quantitative estimates from DNA metabarcoding data, and the phenomenon known as mistagging (also referred to as tag jumping, or index hopping) might require further attention. Consequently, AllGenetics, the Universidade da Coruña, and the Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de A Coruña have joined forces to organise a forum where experts and stakeholders can discuss the most recent advances related to this topic.

We are expecting to hold between 15 and 18 talks given by researchers from different European institutions. Talks will be focused on examples on the use of DNA metabarcoding (industrial applications, soil biology, human microbiome, diet analysis, analysis of bulk metazoan/plant samples, bioreactor microbiome...). Other talks will cover technical aspects such as the impact of:

  • Reference databases.
  • Primer design.
  • High-throughput sequencing platforms.
  • Bioinformatic pipelines.
  • Mistagging / tag jumping / index hopping.

as well as the:

  • Need for biological and technical replicates.
  • Quantitative estimates from DNA metabarcoding data.
  • Statistics of DNA metabarcoding.

Our confirmed speakers are:

  • Antón Vizcaíno (AllGenetics & Biology SL).
  • Arjen de Groot (Wageningen University and Research).
  • Carola Gómez-Rodríguez (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela).
  • Daniel Marquina (Stockholms universitet - Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet).
  • Felix Heeger (Leibniz-Institut für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei).
  • Fernando Ángel Fernández-Álvarez (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - Institut de Ciències del Mar).
  • Fernando Puente-Sánchez (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - Centro Nacional de Biotecnología).
  • Hugo de Boer (Universitetet i Oslo - Naturhistorisk museum).
  • Joaquín Vierna (AllGenetics & Biology SL).
  • Jorge Doña (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - Estación Biológica de Doñana and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign - Illinois Natural History Survey).
  • Marcin Kierczak (Uppsala universitet and National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden).
  • Marta Vila (Universidade da Coruña).
  • Sarah Siu Tze Mak (Københavns Universitet - Statens Naturhistoriske Museum).
  • Silvia Matesanz (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos).
  • Vanessa Álvarez-López (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - Instituto de Investigacións Agrobiolóxicas de Galicia).
  • Verónica Rojo (AllGenetics & Biology SL).

Intended audience

Participants should be master students, early career researchers (pre-docs and post-docs), or senior researchers, either from Industry or Academia, interested in DNA metabarcoding.

The workshop will take place at the Centro de Investigacións Científicas Avanzadas (CICA) on the campus of the Universidade da Coruña.

Participants needing accommodation should contact the student's hall Rialta. For a 10 % discount on accommodation, you should book online at http://www.rialta.net/aparthotel/. The discount code "METABARCORU" is valid between June 25th and 30th 2018. There is free transport by bus from Rialta to the Campus de Elviña, where the CICA is located.

Alternatively, accommodation options are available in the city center. The public bus line "UDC" connects the city center and the Campus de Elviña.

The workshop is free but registration is required. Registration will be open until April 30th at this link.

Some 60 participants will be selected based on their motivation to take part in the workshop. We will contact you to confirm your registration during the first week of May.
