Microsatellite loci developed for the common prawn Palaemon serratus using high-throughput sequencing

A total number of 20 polymorphic loci have been developed by researchers from the Universidade da Coruña in collaboration with AllGenetics.

Palaemon serratus is a prawn species native to the Eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean. This species is caught in various European regions and can be quite expensive when commercialised in Spanish fish markets. Despite being a commercial species, little is known about its populations and it is not clear whether the current levels of exploitation may represent overfishing.

In order to carry out population genetic studies on Palaemon serratus, polymorphic microsatellite markers have been developed by researchers from the Universidade da Coruña (Spain) and AllGenetics. To do so, a microsatellite-enriched library was prepared and sequenced using a high-throughput sequencing platform; then, several primer pairs were biologically tested in individuals of Palaemon serratus and cross-amplified in other Palaemon species (Palaemon elegans, Palaemon adpersus, and Palaemon longirostris). A total number of 20 loci resulted to be polymorphic.

The primer note, which has been co-authored by our colleagues Alejandra Perina and Antón Vizcaíno, has just been published in a joint “Microsatellite records” paper in the journal Conservation Genetics Resources.
